RWANDA SHINES AGAIN : Facts speak for themselves

The Global Corruption Barometer 2013 (TIGCB2013) is out, and Rwanda has been ranked the least corrupt country on the African continent.

There is more cause for celebration : Rwanda is ranked 13 least corrupt country in the world. And as I am writing this, I can’t help but get the last laugh at our enemies who think nothing good comes out of Kigali. I am almost falling out of my chair.

This report, produced by Transparency International points out that Rwanda’s judiciary and police still have corruption issues to be addressed. I hope this is duly noted.

The report surveyed 114,000 people in 107 countries. It is a pretty accurate depiction of corruption world wide, no matter how you slice it.

In the East African context, Rwanda is far ahead of its partners – Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi. Corruption in these countries has been rated at 50 – 74.9%.

The report also points out that Rwanda is the leading investment destination on the African continent. Good news indeed. Pardon my excitement. But by any standards, this is a remarkable achievement for a nation that is 19 years out of the fangs of genocide.

Much has been achieved in Rwanda, but more remains to be done. Good governance, focused and people-oriented leadership has bore us fruits. Rwanda is rising and shinning once more, in spite of what our enemies keep throwing at us.

It should not be out of place to celebrate the resilience of the Rwandan spirit.

About Willis Shalita

I am a writer who is very impassioned about Rwanda and its remarkable journey from the barbaric carnage of Genocide against Tutsi. I am an avid photographer. I believe the African story should be told through African lenses. Our time has come. If not now, when?
